Going under

It has been a while since I posted something here. Sounds are everywhere, yet sometimes they are hard to come by. You have to be either very much on the lookout (so to speak) for sounds, or you have to be lucky.

For this post, I had something in mind.

But I had no idea if I could get what I wanted. The above picture is a still frame from a small video I shot a few weeks ago. It’s a small overhang, dripping with meltwater. My idea was to shoot this, video “tape” it and record the sound from close by. However, I also acquired a hydrophone - an underwater microphone.

That water dripping into the small pool was the ideal candidate for a hydrophone recording.

When I listened back to it, it sounded somewhat “unnatural”. The reason for that is that we never hear this. We only recognize the sound through the air, never from under the water. Even worse, when we have our ears under the water, we still can’t hear the sounds properly as our ears are still filled with air, so they are protected from the water.

A hydrophone doesn’t have that problem. The resulting sound is something we never hear.

So instead of presenting this to you unfiltered, I decided to mix it in with the “normal” air-to-ear sound.

Here is the result:

Carefully balanced between underwater and above, the sound is now much fuller.

Until next time…
